The storyline draws inspiration from historical references but is not intended to closely mirror them.
The envoy of the Golden Horde, Mengu-Temir, a connoisseur of female beauty, arrives in the capital of Russia. He has come with the intention of abducting thousands of Russian soldiers into the Horde. However, realizing that this threatens to incite a riot, he agrees to settle for only a portion of the soldiers and departs, taking with him the wife of Grand Duke Yaroslav's brother, Ustinya, in return.
Mengu leaves Yaroslav a "gift" from the Great Khan - young Nargiz, who rekindles the prince's spirit and presents him with a fateful choice. On one side of the scales lie love and passion, while on the other rest the throne and the life of Nargiz herself, a situation that neither the people nor Yaroslav's lawful wife are willing to accept.
